Filed under General news and Rants on June 28th, 2007

Regular season play of the Championship Gaming Series’ (www.thecgs.com) Region 1 got underway last night at EA’s Los Angeles development studio in Los Angeles, CA.

Red Vs. Blue is at the Shows End!

Filed under General news and Rants on June 27th, 2007

Wired.com discusses the last episode of the Red vs. Blue web series, which ends tonight 06/27/07 with its 100th episode. The long-running show has been one of the best and a ground breaker in the world of machinima. If you enjoyed RvB, their current project is set in the Shadowrun FPS entitled 1-800-MAGIC. Its will be a sad day when RvB ends for me. I have watched every episode at lest 5 times and loved it just as much the first day as the last. Cry

Red vs. Blue, the cult hit, web-video series created from in-game Halo footage, concludes its genre-defining run as it airs its 100th and final episode Wednesday evening.

The comedy series, featuring two squads of hapless Halo heroes locked in an endless civil war prolonged mostly by their own ineptitude, took the emerging machinima medium — movies made with real-time video-game footage — mainstream.

Want to make a Game for the Wii?

Filed under wii on June 27th, 2007

Officials from Nintendo have confirmed plans to release original downloadable content on the Wii, with an announcement today at a private Nintendo developer conference.

The company describes WiiWare as a “game-creation service” that will allow developers of all sizes to create downloadable games content for sale by Nintendo through the Wii Shop Channel.

Currently over one hundred retro tiles are available for download via the Wii’s virtual console, with games paid for via redeemable Wii Points. Other content has so far been restricted to new interactive channels, all of which have been free (although the Internet Channel – featuring a re-purposed Opera Web browser - will incur a charge of 500 Wii Points ($5) from the beginning of July).

In a press statement Nintendo suggests that WiiWare will pave the way for “smaller, more creative games” at lower prices and without any inventory risk to developer. Despite the announcement today, though, the first WiiWare content will not be launched until early 2008.

“Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit,” said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. “WiiWare brings new levels of creativity and value to the ever-growing population of Wii owners.”

Black Powder Red Earth MMO FPS

Filed under PC News on June 27th, 2007

Echelon Software announces Black Powder Red Earth, a multiplayer-only first-person shooter that combines highly stylized visuals and fast-moving tactical action with a persistent virtual marketplace and social network. Co-designed by former US Special Operations Forces members and private security contractors with operational experience in 32 countries on four continents, including Afghanistan and Iraq, BPRE captures the insane pace of high speed direct action missions.

“Rather than build an elaborate 3D world space, BPRE uses the same framework commonly found on the Web for social networking. Players are already used to creating and managing online identities on sites like Myspace and Orkut. They are also buying and selling real and virtual products on sites like Ebay, iTunes and Amazon. By using these familiar tools, BPRE keeps the learning curve as flat as possible,” says Jon Chang, president of Echelon. “Best of all, unbinding these activities from the game executable gives players access to the world of BPRE either from inside the game or from the outside via any Web-enabled device. Persistence is the real world, anytime the players want it.”

Set on Mars in 2043, Players act as mercenary soldiers executing contracts for warring corporations in a variety of urban/industrial sprawls, using bleeding edge weapons in hi-tech team based battles for virtual currency that can be used to purchase new weapons, upgrade existing weapons, buy armor and tactical enhancements to fine tune their in-game experience. As players rank up, they will also be able to open their own mercenary franchises. These franchises provide a base for recruiting other players into a clan, offer in- game advantages for members and allow the owners to open their own storefronts that compete against the game MSRPs and can generate “cash” from new players of the game.

“FPS games are ‘pick up and play’ games that provide instant gratification with short, fast rounds and specific limited goals,” Chang continues. “In BPRE we’ve extended that by rewarding players with in-game currency that can be used to customize the experience and set up their own in-game enterprises. Echelon has detached the social network and virtual marketplace from the game itself, so that it can be accessed from any Web-enabled device!”

Black Powder Red Earth Features:
Game features include:

  • Multiplayer-only, allowing up to 16 players to battle online together
  • Next-generation graphics powered by Unreal Engine 3
  • 8 contract campaign plays out in a detailed near-future 3D environments
  • Earn “virt cash” to collect more than 100 parts and accessories
  • Customize weapons, browse for new items, and build a career in a familiar Web interface in- game or from any Web browser at any time!
  • Build a franchise private military company (PMC) with other players or create a competing store front to sell arms and gear to other players
  • Association with former PMC operatives ensures realistic game play
