Apple To Give Current iPhone Owners $100 Saying oops My Bad

Filed under General news and Rants on September 6th, 2007

apple-iphone-music-coverflow.jpg

After yesterday’s statement about the $200 price reduction for the 8GB iPhone, customers that had already purchased the iPhone at the old price point of $599 were logically teed off.

Steve Jobs got also got a inbox full of irate customer complaints about the $200 price cut.  In an open letter to iPhone customers (or scroll down and read it here), Steve Jobs decided to “offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store.”

Apple noted that more details will be posted next week as Apple and AT&T work out the details of the program.

To all iPhone customers:

I have received hundreds of emails from iPhone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale. After reading every one of these emails, I have some observations and conclusions.

First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it. iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to ‘go for it’ this holiday season. iPhone is so far ahead of the competition, and now it will be affordable by even more customers. It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone ‘tent’. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season.

Second, being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you’ll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon. The good news is that if you buy products from companies that support them well, like Apple tries to do, you will receive years of useful and satisfying service from them even as newer models are introduced.

Third, even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these.

Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple’s website next week. Stay tuned.

We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple.

Steve Jobs
Apple CEO

Huge iPhone Price Drop

Filed under General news and Rants on September 5th, 2007

If you just picked up your new iPhone this week please sit down before reading this.

In addition to the new iPods, ringtones for the iPhone and iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, Apple has announced a price cut for the iPhone.

Apple has dropped the 4GB model from the iPhone lineup. Its sales have been lagging behind the more spacious 8GB model so Apple decided to remove the dead weight. In addition, Apple has cut the price of the 8GB iPhone by $200 – the device will now retail for $399.

Apple Unvails The New iPod Touch

Filed under General news and Rants on September 5th, 2007

ipod-touch.png

Apple today introduced the iPod touch. The iPod touch is really an iPhone stripped of its GSM and phone capabilities.

The device features the same 3.5-inch screen as the iPhone with an 8mm thickness. Two hard drive sizes are available – 8GB and 16GB. Apple also employs the same multi-touch user interface as the iPhone in the new iPod touch.

The iPod touch retains the 802.11b/g Wi-Fi capabilities of the iPhone. Users can connect the iPod touch to home and public wireless networks. The iPod touch also features a couple of built in applications, as with the iPhone.

Safari and YouTube applications are preinstalled for wireless web browsing and video watching. Apple also installs the calendar, contacts, clock, calculator and photo applications. Essentially, the iPod touch is what the iPhone is without a SIM card inserted. With a Street Price starting at $299 for the 8 GB and 399 for the 16GB it’s not a bad deal. Expect the new iPods to show up in retail stores this week.

Selling iPhone Unlocking Software Could = Go to Jail, Do not Pass Go

Filed under General news and Rants, Mobile News on August 30th, 2007

apple-iphone-music-coverflow.jpg

People have figured out how to unlock Apple’s iPhone from AT&T’s cellular network, if you are hoping to make money from the procedure you could face very real legal problems. One of the companies hoping to make money by unlocking iPhones said it is uncertain after a deluge of calls from lawyers representing the phone company.

Unlocking the phone for one’s own use, appears to be legal. If you’re doing it for financial benefit, the legitimacy is less certain. More than a few groups have said that the unlocking software for iPhones is ready, but they are holding off till they see what kind of fallout comes over the next few weeks.

The iPhone was sold only in the U.S., and exclusively for use on the AT&T network. It is compatible with most cell phone networks around the globe. With the iPhone obsession spanning the globe, millions of people would pay truck loads of cash to ‘Be Cool’ and have one of the only iPhone’s around. Lots of cash is going to be lost (AT&T) and gained (iPhone unlocking groups) over the next few months. When ever you have that much cash flying and apple is involved, some one is going to get sued. With all that said I would love to have a iPhone on my T-Mobile account.

iPhone Unlocked UK and US Users Rejoice!

Filed under Mobile News on August 24th, 2007

This afternoon a new hack was released for the Apple IPhone that essentially makes it possible now for someone to get one, and use any cellular provider rather than being locked into ATT.

The iPhoneSIMfree.com team called us up to prove their claim that they cracked Apple’s iPhone SIM lock system, and prove it they did. (No, we don’t have a copy of the unlock software, so don’t even ask us, ok?) The six-man team has been working non-stop since launch day, and they’re officially the first to break Apple’s SIM locks on the iPhone with software. It’s done. Seriously. They wouldn’t tell us when and how they would release it to the public, but you can certainly bet that they’ll try to make a buck on their solution (and rightly so). We can hardly believe the iPhone’s finally been cracked. No, scratch that — we just can’t believe it took this long.
Notes on the install

  • The unlock process took only a couple of minutes. From our end it was totally painless.
  • Once you put your new, non AT&T SIM in the device, you have to go through the usual activation process. This can, of course, be done by anyone anywhere with the right tools (like iASign or iActivator)
  • We tested with an active T-Mobile SIM — after the hack was finished and we reactivated we immediately got full bars and the T-Mobile carrier info popped up in the top bar.
  • Everything is otherwise the same, except the menu system now has a couple more options. The root menu has Carrier settings where you can select your preferred network if you don’t want to roam.
  • The General -> Network menu now has an EDGE network settings area where you can input your carrier’s APN and username / password. We put in our T-Mobile info, and were immediately online. (Apparently these hidden menus were added in the 1.0.1 update, they tell us. How convenient!)
  • Visual voicemail isn’t in the cards — sorry. That was, of course, to be expected because it’s a special AT&T network-specific feature right now. When you hit the voicemail button you are taken immediately to your carrier’s default voicemail line though, and that works just like it would on any other phone.
  • Everything is confirmed as working on a non-AT&T network: SMS send / receive, internet (including Safari, Mail, Google maps, etc.). YouTube doesn’t work out of the box, but that’s to be expected. If you’re not on AT&T you have to manually activate YouTube — here’s the guide on how to do that. (YouTube is the only app you have to activate like this.)
  • We know, it’s kind of crazy, but this isn’t a hoax.
  • No, sorry, you can’t have our unlocked iPhone.

iPhone Games Suck? Get An Nintendo Emulator For It!

Filed under General news and Rants on August 7th, 2007

Do you look at your iPhone and say “Hay I wish I could play my NES games on here” Well now you can. “The Hell You say?” How about some video!

smb.png

Thanks to a native NES emulator for the iPhone by a group over on the Google Code site. Sure there are problems just like any new software but, WOW. Presently there is no sound, and the emulator is a little slow. The control is a lacking but over the entire entire project has done some great things.

Your iPhone Is Not Safe!!!

Filed under Announcements, Mobile News, Off Topic Rant on July 23rd, 2007

(As the NYTimes Reports) A successful vulnerability has been found. Working with the iPhone’s architecture (which also includes some tools from the #iphone-dev community), and proof-of-concept exploit capable of delivering files from the user’s iPhone to a remote attacker. Apple has been notified about the vulnerability and proposed a patch.

The exploit is delivered via a malicious web page opened in the Safari browser on the iPhone. There are several delivery vectors that an attacker might utilize to get a victim to open such a web page. For example:

  • An attacker controlled wireless access point: Because the iPhone learns access points by name (SSID), if a user ever gets near an attacker-controlled access point with the same name (and encryption type) as an access point previously trusted by the user, the iPhone will automatically use the malicious access point. This allows the attacker to add the exploit to any web page browsed by the user by replacing the requested page with a page containing the exploit.
  • A misconfigured forum website: If a web forum’s software is not configured to prevent users from including potentially dangerous data in their posts, an attacker could cause the exploit to run in any iPhone browser that viewed the thread. (This would require some slight changes in our proof of concept exploit, however.)
  • A link delivered via e-mail or SMS: If an attacker can trick a user into opening a website that the attacker controls, the attacker can easily embed the exploit into the main page of the website.

When the iPhone’s version of Safari opens the malicious web page, arbitrary code embedded in the exploit is run with administrative privileges. In our proof of concept, this code reads the log of SMS messages, the address book, the call history, and the voicemail data. It then transmits all this information to the attacker. However, this code could be replaced with code that does anything that the iPhone can do. It could send the user’s mail passwords to the attacker, send text messages that sign the user up for pay services, or record audio that could be relayed to the attacker.

O2 Is Reported To Be exclusive iPhone Dealer In UK

Filed under General news and Rants, Mobile News on July 6th, 2007

Cellular phone operator O2 is reported to have won the desired deal to sell Apple’s iPhone in the UK. Press reports said that O2 is set to sign an exclusive contract before long and should have the new phones on sale in time for Christmas. On the other hand a spokesperson for O2’s owner, Spain’s Telefonica, said that a deal had not been signed.

Vodafone, which had up to that time been favored as the probable winner of the contract, saw its shares fall 2.4%. The iPhone’s are projected to be sold for about £300 and O2 will be hoping that the iPhone is enough to win customers from competitor networks.
