Nintendo setting company sales records, but what does that mean?

nintendowii.jpgNintendo had it’s biggest week ever, selling 653,000 DS Lites, the all-time high for any console from the company, and 350,000 Wiis, second only to the week of launch.

My response is what did you expect? Of course it’s going to be more than they have ever sold for previous consoles. Video games, especially consoles, have only exploded into a multi-billion dollar industry since then, so it’s not like there’s a smaller pool of people to buy the things.

It’s like when movie companies break opening weekend records. Movies break these records because it costs twice as much to go to the movies as it did even 10 years ago, let alone the 50 years since some of the greatest movies have been released. In a similar, though admittedly slightly different way, video games are going to continuously break these records because they’re only going to get more popular. Of course, when they reach a certain point of saturation the record-breakings will come slower, but they will still happen for the same reason.

What’s more interesting are the relative records. What precentage of the population that plays video games bought a DS in this one week? If it’s more than the percentage of gamers that bought a NES when it was 3 years from it’s U.S. launch, then that’s something impressive and would certainly make me say it had broken some records.

Wii And DS Setting Nintendo Sales Records

Nintendo of America has set a new sales record by selling more products during the Thanksgiving week than at any other time in the company’s history.

During the period November 18 to November 24, over 653,000 DS units were sold, smashing the previous record of 600,000 Game Boy Advance consoles sold in 2005.

A further 350,000 Wii home systems were also snapped up by Christmas shoppers, along with “millions of games and accessories”. Here is the full release:

In the first week of the 2007 holiday shopping season, Nintendo of America has sold more Nintendo products than at any other time in its history. This includes more than 653,000 Nintendo DSâ„¢ portable video game systems, 350,000 Wiiâ„¢ home systems and millions of games and accessories throughout the United States - and the season is just getting started.

Nintendo DS set a new all-time sales record for Thanksgiving week, eclipsing the previous mark of 600,000 Game Boy® Advance systems sold during the same period in the United States in 2005. Nintendo DS remains on track to be the top-selling video game system of 2007.

Nintendo’s 350,000 Wii systems represent the highest one-week U.S. sales total outside of its launch week one year ago. Wii has been dubbed the must-have gift of the 2007 holiday season and has been placed at the top of numerous gift lists. Nintendo has repeatedly increased its shipments and its fiscal-year sales forecast for Wii in an attempt to meet soaring demand. Wii reached 5 million sold in the United States faster than any video game system in history, after only 12 months of availability there.

Both Wii and Nintendo DS have continued their yearlong momentum into the holidays without altering their prices. And both remain attractive values for shoppers: Wii has an MSRP of $249.99, while Nintendo DS has an MSRP of $129.99.

“As shoppers look for ways to maximize their limited holiday spending money, they turn to gifts that can be used by the entire family,” says George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. “Wii and Nintendo DS offer something for every member of the family. They’re the most fun video game experiences at the most affordable price.”

With higher gas prices and fuel costs, and the lukewarm expectations for the 2007 holiday shopping season, Wii and Nintendo DS might be just what Santa ordered: Thirty-five percent of consumers said they plan to spend less than they did last year, according to a survey conducted by Opinion Research Corp. for the Consumer Federation of America and the Credit Union National Association. Similarly, a USA Today/Gallup Poll showed that 25 percent of Americans expect to spend less on gifts this year than they did in 2006.

Note that the internal Nintendo of America numbers referenced in this release represent sales from Sunday, Nov. 18, through Saturday, Nov. 24.

Cyanide Studio Announces Blood Bowl and Future Plans

kk-bloodbow.jpgThe game developer Cyanide Studio has announced some general plans for their company in the next year including ‘Blood Bowl’. Here is a snip:

2007 has been “full speed ahead” at Cyanide! The studio took on an international dimension with the opening of a facility in Montreal, Canada and it cast aside its “PC/sport” mantle to release games for both the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS platforms as well as making a successful incursion into the hack ‘n’ slash genre with Loki.

Cyanide’s Canadian studio (Amusement Cyanide Inc.) is currently working on several exciting projects. The most complex is the development of a dynamic 3D animation engine which integrates physical and biomechanical laws under the control of a powerful artificial intelligence system. The engine will generate real-life, real-time character behaviour for collisions, falls, tackles, kicks, punches, etc which take into account all the forces governing the game environment. The resulting engine will be used in future Cyanide games like Blood Bowl, which is to be published by Focus Home Interactive, as well as being licensed to other small and medium-sized game studios, worldwide. In addition to the animation engine, the Canadian studio is working on two of Cyanide’s current games: an add-on to the recently released hack ‘n slash RPG - Loki - as well as a version of Blood Bowl (see below) for the Nintendo DS.

Game development is continuing apace inside Cyanide’s French HQ. Based in Nanterre, in the west of Paris, the various teams are working on a wide variety of projects. The 2008 edition of the perennial favorite Pro Cycling Manager is well underway and it will be released, as usual, just before the start of the Tour de France (June 2008). Other teams are busy with the adaptation of Blood Bowl to the PC and console platforms (Xbox 360, Sony PSP and Nintendo DS). This will be a faithful representation of Games Workshop’s board game in which insane warriors of the Warhammer fantasy universe compete in a “blood sport” that vaguely resembles American football. Release is scheduled for late 2008. At the same time a multiplayer action/RTS game will be brought to market. Set in a dungeon environment where players embody greedy adventurers looking for gold and glory, it is by far the most comical universe ever created by Cyanide.

Red Spiderman 3 PSP for Europe and red PSP for Japan - No PSP Love For The US

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has announced that it will release two PlayStation Portable bundles for Japan and one for the Europe, Sony recently announced two different types of red PSPs for Europe and Japan. Europe will receive the Spider-Man PSP, which features a red face with black buttons and back. It will also include Spider-Man 3 the game and the UMD movie. Japan they will receive a 2 new deep red limited edition PSP models. We don’t have any details on the Europe Spiderman version.

Details on the 2 new bundles for Japan:

“PSP Deep Red Value Pack” and “PSP Deep Red 1 Seg Pack” will be available beginning Thursday, December 13th 2007 for a limited time, for 22,800 ($198) and 29,800 ($260) respectively.

The Deep Red Value Pack, which the company says is intended as a “starter pack” for new PSP owners, includes a new “Deep Red” PSP, a pouch, a hand strap, a cloth and a 32MB Memory Stick Duo. The Deep Red 1 Seg Pack bundles one of the red PSPs with a 1 Seg tuner (for mobile audio and digital broadcast in Japan), a stand to hold the PSP during long TV-viewing sessions, a strap, a cloth, and a 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo. It’s marketed as an all-around entertainment pack, clearly highlighting the mobile TV feature.

EA Confirms EA Chicago is Closing

ealogo.jpgEA Chicago has closed! Shacknews.com has confirmation from EA that they are indeed closing their Windy City studio, which employed some 150 people. This comes as part of a planned restructuring by the publisher.

“Within the EA Games Label, we are committed to running each franchise and facility as a city/state, teams with unique creative identities as well as responsibility for product quality, ship dates and profitability….Unfortunately, EA Chicago hasn’t been able to meet that standard….Closing EA Chicago is the toughest decision I’ve made in my career - one that in no way reflects on the talent and dedication of the people who work there.”

EA Chicago was responsible for titles like Def Jam, Fight Night, and the Marvel fighting game. No big loss when it comes to game titles, but wow EA should really look at its CEO bonus structure to cut before slashing the people that can make the games.

You Cant Buy Manhunt 2 At Target So Dont Try

manhunt2.jpgMore trouble for Rockstar Games Manhunt 2, it looks like Target will refuse shipments at the store level and only sell the game online. Gee I bet they will still sell unrated edition DVD’s along side the ultra gory horror movies, BUT OMG we can’t sell manhunt 2 to people 18 and over in the store.

I just spoke to a contact at my local Target store, who informed me of an interesting internal memo. Apparently all Target stores are to stop selling Manhunt 2, going so far as to tell managers to refuse shipments of the title for all systems, with Take 2 agreeing to take back all unopened copies of the game.

Why is this action being taken? The extreme violence in the game is the given reason, but my contact (an employee but not a manager) was told that it was due in greater part to the unfavorable coverage the game got in the national press the last several days. Target stores had been selling the game since it’s launch, but it was only today that they were told to pull the product and refuse further shipments.

The listing for Manhunt 2 on the Target website shows that the item is “not available in stores.”

I’ve spoken to employees of several other large retailers (Best Buy, Gamestop and Circuit City) and none of them are, at this time, taking similar actions.

Games + Adware = Don’t Buy It or Give Me A Discount

Do you read the license agreements when you install software, or do you just keep hitting next? Well if you downloaded the newly released Hellgate: London demo you should have, since you get the extra bonus of adware included. (Advertising-supported software)

Here’s the pertinent section of the license you have to agree to once Hellgate is installed onto your system:

Here is one better example for you As reported on CNN.com about splinter cell and other titles serving in-game ads for the UK Xbox 360 users.

Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) is taking a new approach to attracting new recruits. ‘The monthlong ad campaign, which starts at the end of October, is being run by GCHQ, the recruitment firm TMP Worldwide and Microsoft-owned in-game ad agency Massive Inc. Ads headed ‘Careers in British Intelligence’ will appear as billboards in scenes in Splinter Cell and other games including Need for Speed Carbon and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars when they are played on computers and Microsoft Xbox consoles in Britain.

You might be saying well the ads are only posters on walls in certain areas, but with the adware fully incorporated into the game they don’t have to stop at just posters on walls. You could find yourself kicking the crap out of some Zombie flesh by chucking some Windows ME CDs at it, since Massive is owned by The Borg errr Microsoft.

I am ok with including this crap err technology with a free demo but to be included in a game you’re paying full price or paying a monthly fee for … NEVER! I have refused to buy a game at full price that has in game ads in it. I feel the same way about in game ads as I did when I found out Blizzard and World of Warcraft had been stealing my bandwidth to substitute for having game patch servers by using a bittorrent system. This would have been ok if they would have had an option to turn it off or receive the download some other way, or *Gasp* discounted my bill for supplying them with bandwidth.

Us as a consumers have allowed this to continue and dare I say it, even grow. More greedy game studios are looking at this as a great option to pad the bank account even more than the already high prices they charge for games.

If you don’t like it, do something about it like write emails, don’t by the game or setup a petition. But for your sake do something or all the games you play will be just like watching TV with commercials popping up at every loading screen / save point.

Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Burning Earth Xbox 360 Has Shipped

THQ Inc. today announced the release of the Avatar: The Last Airbender–The Burning Earth video game, based on the hit animated Nickelodeon television series.  Avatar: The Last Airbender–The Burning Earth is currently available for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system, Nintendo’s Wii home video game system, Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance.  In addition, the game is scheduled to be released for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft next month, marking the debut of the first Nickelodeon title for this system. 

Based on the popular Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series from Nickelodeon, players will follow the storyline of the second season as Aang puts up a courageous fight against the evil Fire Nation to restore balance in the war-torn Earth Kingdom city. Players will be able to experience an epic adventure playing as five new playable characters including Appa, Jet, Toph, Zuko and Uncle Iroh as they experience brand-new firebending moves and go head-to-head in the all new Arena Combat for intense fighting action. Dramatic air battles will also take place as players experience new flying levels while playing as Momo and Appa. 

“THQ has done a fantastic job translating the epic adventures of the Avatar: The Last Airbender television series into engaging interactive entertainment that brings an entirely new Avatar experience to fans,” said Shaul Olmert, vice president of digital products, Nickelodeon. “We’re excited to make our Xbox 360 debut with our new Avatar game.”
