Video game systems and the rise of drug use!

With all the data we as a society track now days this is one that has been over looked. All the talk about violent video games and what they are doing to our kids, I thought I would look at the numbers a little more. Scanning the U.S. Department of Justice crime numbers thinking I would not find anything new. I found something so crazy that I could not even believe what I was looking at. If you will look at the numbers you will see what I see.

Console Drug use Numbers

Game console systems are directly linked to the rise in Drug use in people ages 18 +. The very same age group that game systems are targeted to. Starting with the first home game system 1972 Magnavox Odyssey and ending in 2005 with the release of the Xbox 360 and the Sony PSP. [View Chart on left] It’s not the kids its the adults that have the problem here. I would like to push legalization to ban the sale of game systems to any person over the age of 18 to try and stem the tide of drug abuse. I can not believe no one has taken action before now!

Now I know there was a drop in the numbers reporting for 1991. I would like to point out that in 1989 with the release of the Nintendo GameBoy, NEC TurboGrafx-16 and Sega Genesis that was really the start of the downturn. That was not a over all great time for game systems based on the numbers. In 1991 the Nintendo Super NES was launched and up to that time it was the best game system to hit the store shelves. With one of the best game systems on the market the drug use continued to rise and was back on track by the 1995 release of Sega Saturn and the Sony Playstation.

Now the numbers did rise over the next few years. They took one more large jump in 2001 with the release of the Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo GameCube. Drug use since then has been on a steady and dramatic increase all the way into 2005 with the release of the Xbox 360 and Sony PSP. That is where the U.S. Government numbers end, but I can tell you not the drug use.

People are quick to point out the abundant violence in video games and what it does to the kids. I say to you “WHAT ABOUT THE ADULTS!!! WHAT ABOUT THE DRUG USE!!!”.

I write this article so I can tell you this.

Consoles and property crime RatesPeople can bend statistics to say almost anything, and make what ever they want to say look good. Here is the same chart with property crime. [View Chart on left]

I will tell you that if you do your home work, there is NO WAY you can make me believe video games make kids violent. If you look at the U.S. Governments numbers for people ages 12 plus here [LINK] and [LINK] . They say it right on the site “Violent crime rates declined for both males and females since 1994.“.

People now days are such sheep they will go along with anything as long as you look and sound like some stuffed shirt. Sheep choose not to look into it themselves, or even read up on what they see/hear. People “LET” them selves be told what is good and bad or what you should and should not do. If you educate your self and then “AGREE” with good , bad, should or should not thats ok. You can then say “I am not a sheep!

PLEASE Don’t be Sheep!

interesting, but the massive flaw in that data is the fact it is numbers, and not percentages.

it is important to remember that since 75 drug use has become much more accepted and commonplace. it is completely irrelevant to put along a timeline of game consoles. all it is is a timeline, you may as well put gas prices below it, and link a rise in the price of petrol to drug use. it is irrelevant.
of course drug use has gone up in 18+’s. drugs are easier to get, cheaper, stronger, and, sometimes, safer, with society taking a more accepting view of casual or recreational drug use. it’s little surprising that the numbers have gone up so much.

it would also be interesting to know how many in that age group there are now as compared to when the survey was started.

with the property thing it is interesting. but all you can really say is that property crime has fallen. if the chart was correlated with a % of the population playing or owning consoles or games, that would be more sensible.

but now, pple in america are richer than back in the 70;s, governments have locked up more thieves, better education now. its all immaterial.

good numbers man, but they have nothing to do with %’s and console numbers. its just a timeline, and that means nothing.

i dont mean to be a poopy pants… but its just completely unsound :)

You are correct Ace they don’t hold up at all. Thats the point! Hence the Text below.

“I write this article so I can tell you this.

“People now days are such sheep they will go along with anything as long as you look and sound like some stuffed shirt. If you educate your self and then “AGREE” with good , bad, should or should not thats ok. You can then say “I am not a sheep!“”

I could stand out side Game Stop and ask a 1,000 people ” Have you done drugs and do you own a game system? ” then spout the numbers talk a good talk and people would jump on the bandwagon.
